Buck-a-Bag
The Buck-a-Bag project started with a few friends who gathered together wanting to make a difference in Baltimore. The Helping Up Mission was selected as the primary recipient. The project, bagged lunches. Lots of bagged lunches. Each month this group would gather together in fellowship and make lunches. Two sandwiches, an apple, a treat and a juice box or water. Each meeting the quantity of bagged lunches grew. First fifty, then seventy-five, and finally hundred. The ministry stayed on track and continued this project, of once a month lunch making, for almost five years.
Since then, wherever I was in ministry, Buck-a-Bag resurfaced. One dollar, that's all it takes, one dollar to make a bagged lunch. Of course, it is becoming harder and harder to keep the price at a dollar, however with smart shopping, the name remains true to the cause. The goal of Buck-a-Bag is to feed people who are hungry, help a mission with their ministry and most important, include a small message of hope in each bag, usually in the form of a hand-made greeting card. The look on the faces of the guys when they pull out the card is priceless.
Buck-a-Bag is coming to the Genxaret. We aren't making lunches, however $1.00 is going to the Helping Up Mission for their expenses. God will use these funds to further His kingdom. As it tells us in Matthew, "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat..."
Helping Up Mission
Since 1885, Helping Up Mission has been coming to the aid of men in the City of Baltimore and surrounding region. The homeless have been receiving the help they need to start a new life.
Today, most of the men who come to us have a drug and/or alchohol addiction problem. We know that homeless addicts can get well if they get the right kind of help. This is what the Mission's "Spiritual Recovery Program" is all about.
A new dormitory and dining facility opened in November 2007. Today, we are serving approximately four hundred men everyday!
